Somalia is quietly losing its war

This barely makes the news, which is exactly why I'm flagging it. Al-Shabab launched an offensive in early 2025 and has clawed back most of central Somalia, setting up checkpoints within 50km of Mogadishu.
It is not a far-away problem. A jihadist-controlled state on the Red Sea shipping lane reshapes migration, trade and security across the Horn of Africa. Fifteen minutes here is worth more than a month of headlines you will not see.
